Dear Harp Friends,

As I come to the surprisingly emotional decision of letting go of some of my harps, I am drawn to the stories that each one of them holds. And they do have stories!!! That being said, I do need my beauty harps to find new homes and new chapters in their lives. Let me introduce them to you!

Lyon & Healy SALZEDO pedal harp

My very first beauty Lyon & Healy Salzedo pedal harp. It was such a big deal for my Dad and me to go to L&H in Chicago and choose this harp. It arrived in time for my graduation recital in performance at UofT which included the Debussy Trio for flute, viola and harp. SUCH fond memories! This harp has seen so many stages and venues in Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland and the US and was my much loved harp for many years of my career. Yes Newfoundland! What an amazing experience it was to play this harp for a production of Britten’s Midsummer Night’s Dream. The harp received a major repair by Lyon & Healy Chicago to reconnect the base to the soundboard. Its most recent regulation was December 1st, 2024 by Zio. The harp remains in good condition for a mature harp and has a wonderful tone.

Kortier electro-acoustic lever harps

Many of you know that I love and have played harps built by the late David Kortier (of Duluth, MN) for decades. All of my lever harp recordings (except for Trees.Listen (2024)) were performed on Kortier harps and until recently they were also my touring harps. The two Kortier harps that I am selling have travelled with me across Canada and to Italy.

David Kortier was, in my opinion, one of the best lever harp builders in North America, and definitely one of the most creative. A trained orchestral bassoonist and early music player, he was always repairing instruments and eventually began making them and at some point building only harps. He was also a leader and innovator in electric harps and uniquely, midi harps. Many years ago I had his prototype solid body electric harp, which I premiered in concert at the ROM. His harps eventually were all electro-acoustic, except for the stunning reproduction historical Irish harps like the ones he built for Ann Heyman.

Dave’s harps were, apart from having exceptional tone, an easy transition for me between pedal harp and lever harp playing due to the string tension and spacing being gently different. These lever harps can be, and are, strung with Bow Brand LEVER GUT strings (never use pedal gut on them! Nylon and carbon fiber strings are an option. I recommend North Shore Strings for nylon). The wire strings in the base are made by North Shore Strings. Truthfully, it is very difficult to let these two Kortier harps go, with their beautiful warm tone, but letting go of them will give them new life with a new harp player.
